Project Objectives

In the SEMICS project a holistic electronic information and communication system on board of multipurpose heavy-lift carriers will be developed. The focus is laid on the following goals:

  • Reduction of  administrative work input of the officers on board
  • creatioin of transparent and partially automated processes
  • enabling significantly improved communication between shore and sea
  • indirectly achieving enhancement of ship safety and security due to more time for nautical duties

The objectives of SEMICS are to set-up an Intranet platform for digital processing of administrative tasks and documents on board and to implement central data administration that increases data availability on shore and on board. Parallel to this, a knowledge database and a Beluga e-learning academy will be developed. This way procedures can be made transparent and partially automated and communication between shore and ship can be improved.
The system thereby contributes to a reduction, simplification and digitalisation of administrative processes in order to save three to four hours of administrative work daily. Successful implementation of the solutions developed in SEMICS will lead to an increasing degree of autonomy and local intelligence of the shipboard communication systems and thus a paradigm change in design and production as well as management and monitoring of future ship systems.

The SEMICS system can help to make the high cost structure as well as the organisational procedures and structure more effective and efficient, in particular for German shipping companies. SEMICS thus is a major contribution to preservation of the competitiveness of the German maritime sector.
During implementation of the project Beluga Shipping will prepare two test vessels of the new P2 series both, structurally and equipment-wise, to such an extent that the prototype SEMICS system can be integrated into the ship infrastructure without any problem.
