SEMICS: Development and implementation of a holistic maritime information and communication system on board heavy-lift carriers
SEMICS = Smart Electronic Maritime Information and Communication System
Digital documents, Internet and e-mail, long taken for granted in on-shore communication, are still in the development stage at sea. The network connection on ships is usually poor, the transmission rates are low, many documents are still filled out manually. The resulting high administrative work input for officers reduces their time for nautical tasks on board, especially for ship security and safety. The demand for electronic data management and significantly improved communications between shore and sea is thus enormously high. This is where the SEMICS project comes in. The goal is a paperless document management system and central data administration, making the procedures transparent, partial automation and integrating the ship into the on-shore shipping company Intranet.
